Healthy Practices To Improve Your Oral Health

Oral health is defined as the state in which the tissues of the mouth and the teeth are healthy. This generally means that teeth are not decaying, gums are not inflamed or bleeding, and there are no signs of infection.

Good oral health is important for a person’s overall health.

Bacteria in the mouth can infect the rest of the body, and the mouth is an entryway for sickness to enter the body. Some forms of bacteria, such as strep, can be deadly. Additionally, poor oral health can be linked to conditions including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, premature birth, and low-birth-weight babies. Having good oral health means you are free of all these conditions and have a healthy smile.

Tips To Maintain Good Oral Health

  • Brush your teeth

Dentists recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing your teeth helps to remove bacteria and food particles from the surface of your teeth. Brushing your teeth also removes the film of bacteria from your teeth, which prevents bad breath.

If you have trouble cleaning your teeth, consider purchasing an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are easy to use and can remove plaque and food that plaque left behind. After brushing, always rinse your mouth to remove any remaining food particles.

  • Floss daily

The mouth is full of bacteria, which feed on food particles and sugars left behind in your mouth after eating. If you don’t properly clean between your teeth every day, these bacteria can continue to multiply and lead to cavities. Brushing your teeth twice a day is important, but you also need to floss regularly. Flossing helps remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach.

  • Visit your dentist regularly

Visit your dentist every six months for an exam and cleaning. By seeing your dentist regularly, you can decrease your risk of dental problems.

The American Dental Association recommends getting your dental cleanings done twice a year. These regular cleanings help remove plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. If plaque and tartar buildup is left on your teeth for too long, it can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

  • Use mouthwash

Mouthwash is an effective way to eliminate bacteria and plaque between brushings. It is typically recommended that you use mouthwash twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed. Mouthwash also kills the bacteria that cause bad breath. It’s most effective when used in conjunction with brushing and flossing.

  • Eat a healthy diet

A healthy diet is the cornerstone of oral health. Eating nutritious meals and snacks will help your body fight infections, reduce inflammation, and keep your gums healthy. Choose whole, unprocessed foods as often as possible, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Consume lean proteins, such as poultry, fish, and beans, as well as low-fat dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt.

  • Avoid alcohol

While moderate drinking may not be harmful, you should still take extra precautions if you are a heavy drinker. Alcohol can dry out your mouth, which can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. It also irritates your gums, which can lead to redness and bleeding.

  • Avoid chewing on hard objects

While you may be tempted to chew on ice, pens, or pencils, you can actually damage your teeth by chewing on non-food items. Even chewing on ice can be harmful to your teeth, as ice is hard and can cause tooth fractures. Additionally, biting down on ice and pens can damage your jaw.
